Carelia’s tips
What are your plans for the day? Any outdoor activities?
The sunscreen protection in babies and kids is an absolute need. Their skin is more delicate and especially prone to get burned. For those free spirits who only think about playing for hour and hours in the park, the poll, the countryside or the beach, it is indispensable to protect them in a safe and healthy way while they enjoy the sun.
What’s a chemical solar filter and a physical solar filter?
The chemical solar filters penetrate the skin and work by absorbing the UV energy and transforming it into heat. The physical solar filters work as a mirror by reflecting the sun radiation away from the skin.
A sunscreen mineral protector (physical) combines titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. A chemical sun protector combines different ingredients such us oxybenzone, octinoxate/ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, homosalate, octisalate o octocrylene.
The physical filters, due to their screen effects, are the most suitable ones for those who have sensitive skin or a tendency to dermatitis.
What’s SPF and how does it work?
SPF means Solar Protection Factor.
It indicates the period during which the skin is protected against the sun.
The skin starts to burn, on average, from 5 to 10 minutes after being under the sun with no solar filter. The sunscreen protection SPF 30, for example, increases that period of time during 5 minutes x 30 (150 minutes) before starting to burn.
The type of skin, location, time of the year, bathing, excessively sweating or how the sunscreen has been applied are some of the factors that can make the level of protection vary.
The SPF just guarantees the period of the sunscreen’s effectivity when facing the sun, not the amount of time the skin can be exposed.
Did you know it?
Children younger than 6 months of age shouldn’t be exposed to the sun. Their skin is very sensitive and immature, with no ability to defend itself against the sun.
Protect them with suitable clothes, their head with a wide-brimmed hat and their eyes with sunglasses that block the UVA and UVB rays. Be extremely cautious with the most sun sensitive parts: face, neck, head, shoulders, neckline, ears, hands and feet’s bridge.
The best time to go with the kids to the beach is early in the morning or in the afternoon when the sun is already going down. Avoid sun exposure between 12-16h. when the intensity of solar radiation is at its highest levels.
In the shade or under an umbrella there is also the need to use sunscreen protection, especially if there are surfaces reflecting radiation (water, sand, pavement…) .
Apply the sunscreen protection gently until its complete absorption. Reapply every 2 hours and after bathing, sweating or drying.
The sun protectors must also be used on cloudy days because 90% of radiations go through the clouds.
Take into account that sun radiations on the skin increase with water, snow (80%), sand (25%) and grass (10) because they reflect it making the effects to be added.
The risk of sunburns increases with altitude, each 300 meters, increase 4% of erythematic power of ultraviolet radiations.
Spring and Summer are the seasons of the year when the solar radiation reaches us with all their energy.
Do not use sunscreen protectors that were open last year, they lose efficiency.
And avoid long exposure to the sun.
Even though we need the wonderful solar energy for our organism because stimulates the synthesis of vitamin D, favours the blood circulation and makes us feel better and happier; an overexposure has adverse effects on the skin in short and long term. The skin has memory.
